Webinar Title: Navigating the Maze: Vascular and Circulatory System

Webinar Overview:

This is the second of seven Webinars that Instruct-online and Speaker - Glenn Krauss are offering which will provide Clinical Medicine Instruction outlining common diseases within each group and complement/supplement with case studies.

Coders in general today possess basic knowledge of clinical medicine that has been acquired on the job and as part of their formalized training in the area of coding if they were fortunate enough to undergo instructional training at coding classes. Medical records coding has changed dramatically within the last few years to the point extensive clinical knowledge is essential in order to accurately and completely assign all diagnoses for inpatient encounters. Knowledge of disease processes and the relationship between each are essential as part of the transition from coding as a task to coding as a role.

Coding as a role requires the coder to possess and demonstrate an advanced level of clinical knowledge and acumen than was previously required to competently and accurately assign medical record ICD-9 codes and DRGs. This heightened level of clinical knowledge and skill set includes a broad based understanding of common disease processes, inter-relationships between these different disease processes, various treatment modalities of these disease processes, and finally atypical presentations of disease processes.

Take your current knowledge of clinical medicine to the next level by attending all or any one of the seven Clinical Medicine Instructional Webinars sponsored by Instruct-Online. Each Webinar will be geared towards providing clinical instruction and discussion on a wide array of disease processes organized in a similar fashion as the disease processes by chapter in the ICD-9 book. There will be ample time devoted for the participants to have their questions answered at the end of each Webinar.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Learn the roles the vascular and circulatory system play in sustaining human life
  • Understand the different disease processes and pathophysiologies contributing to the disruption of the vascular and circulatory system
  • Gain an appreciation for the various diagnostic tests used in diagnosing and managing vascular and circulatory system disease processes
  • Recognize atypical presentations of vascular and circulatory system diagnoses and how similar signs and symptoms can represent a host of different disease entities
  • Learn how the physicians ultimately draw conclusions and come up with a final diagnosis
  • Understand the different strategies to reduce and manage risk factors that contribute to vascular and circulatory diseases, recognizing risk and other contributing factors to the development of congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, peripheral vascular disease, neuropathic ulcers venous stasis ulcers, and cellulitis
  • Tie what is discussed during the Webinar together through review and comments on two real life clinical case studies, including pointing out of clinical clues and implicit medical record documentation and their relationship to final diagnoses in each case

The following are only a few of the topics to be discussed:

  • The roles of the vascular & circulatory system
  • The disease processes
  • The disease pathophysiologies
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Atypical presentations
  • Physician conclusions
  • Physician final diagnosis
  • Risk Factors
    • Recognizing
    • Reducing
    • Managing
  • Clinical case studies
  • Questions
